What is the procedure for building a Web presence?

October 14th, 2010

In this part of the Web Hosting Guide we explain the process you need to follow, from start to finish, to establish a successful presence on the Web.

  • Choose a Domain Name for your site
The first thing you need to do when establishing a Web presence is decide on a Domain Name. Choosing the right Domain Name is very important, as it directly affects how easy it is for potential visitors to find your site. Try for something that’s easy to recognize, easy to remember, and to easy to guess. For example, if your business is “Email Marketing” then “emailloop.net” would be a good Domain Name since it’s logical, easy to remember, and easy to spell. It’s also a good idea to think of alternate Domain Names in case the first one you think of is already taken. If you are not planning on building your Web site right away, you might still want to consider registering your Domain as soon as possible. Thousands of Domain Names are registered every day, and there’s no guarantee that yours will still be around when you decide to build your site.
  • Select a Web hosting plan that’s right for you
Most people start by browsing through the hosting plan descriptions on this site. We offer a plan for everyone, but it’s not always easy to decide which one is for you. Here are some tips to help narrow down your choices:

    • Consider Hosting Basic if you are just starting out with the Internet presence and want to build a Web site. It is a snap with Easy Site.
    • Consider the Hosting Enhanced – Premium plans if the site is for a growing business and you need enhanced tools and features.
    • If you plan on selling anything from your Web site, take a look at our e-commerce solutions.
    • If you plan on using Microsoft development tools, Microsoft Office extensions or databases consider the Windows 2003 plans.

Verio also has many Web site Consultants dedicated to helping you establish your site. You can give them a call at 1-888-438-8374. They can help you decide on a hosting plan, answer any questions you might have, and even walk you though the order process.

When you have decided which Web hosting plan best meets your need, click on the buy button on that plan’s page to start the ordering process. Placing the order is easy and your site will be running in a matter of hours.

  • Build and publish your Web site
Building your own Web site can be very gratifying, but doesn’t have to be very difficult. Create your own web site and publish it to the Internet in just a few minutes time with the Easy Site design studio from Verio. This powerful web design program is available free with Unix Shared Hosting plans and the Windows Basic hosting plan. There are other software packages available – such as Microsoft FrontPage 2000 – that make creating and publishing your Web site relatively quick and painless. Verio supports the use of most Web site design and publishing tools.
  • Promote your Web site
To really succeed on the Web, you need more than just a Web site. You need “traffic” – a steady stream of visitors coming to check out your products, services, information, and everything else you offer online. In order to draw people to your site, you need to be listed in the Web’s most popular search engines and Web directories. Services like NetAnnounce can help you get traffic to your site by listing your site with search engines and giving you tips for making your Web site more easy to find online.
  • Analyze the results
The success of a Web site is generally measured by how many visitors it gets. Your Web server automatically logs each time someone accesses one of your Web pages. Looking at these logs can tell you how much traffic your site gets, how popular different parts of your site are, and when your site is the busiest. Analyzing your traffic can even give you an idea of which parts of your site may need to be improved or expanded. All Verio Web hosting plans come with built-in tools that you can use to help you analyze your traffic. Once you become a Verio customer, it is easy to log into a custom control panel and access current site statistics.

All Verio web hosting plans come with built-in tools, such as Urchin Web traffic reporting, that you can use to help you analyze your traffic. Once you become a Verio customer, it is easy to log into a custom control panel and access current and historical site statistics.

Top 5 Features to look for in Free Web Hosting

December 10th, 2009

Looking for a free web host today is a lot different then it was just a few years back. Make sure to look at all of your choices and to compare the web hosting plans. Below are the top 5 features to look for when choosing the perfect free web host.

Unlimited Space & Bandwidth
In most cases you are getting a free web account to avoid paying for hosting. The last thing you want to happen is for you to have a free page up for a few days and then be hit with an “out of space – please pay to upgrade”. Free web hosts usually place ads on your pages and make more money the more space and bandwidth you use. Thus, they shouldn’t have a problem with offering unlimited space & bandwidth for free (without using that to force you to upgrade).

Limited Non-Intrusive Ads
These days most free web hosts can get by from very limited ads either on the 404 pages or on the footers of your pages. You shouldn’t need to have your entire site covered by your hosts banner ads and pop-ups to get a decent hosting account. You should also stay away from hosts that have absolutely no ads. These hosts are obviously not generating any revenue and won’t be able to stay in business and pay for their expenses for long.

An Established Company
It’s become so easy to start a free web host that companies can easily seem great one day and then disappear the next. This is especially the case since the service being offered is “free” and requires very limited expertise to get started. Make sure your web host is well established and has been around offering free web hosting for a while. Several companies like, T35 Hosting, have been offering free web hosting services for over 12 years.

Uploading Your Site
The most important feature you will use from any free web host is the uploading feature. This is how you will upload your initial site and make any future changes. Make sure your host has several options to upload and edit your files like FTP and an online file manager (when you are away from home and don’t have an ftp application installed).

Reliable Support
The last thing you expect from your new web host is for things to break or not work, but unfortunately that is sometimes the case. When this happens, the only one there to help you is the host’s support team. Compare web hosts and make sure you use one that offers a comprehensive support system. Features to look for include a helpdesk, support forum, and a live chat. If the host has a forum make sure to visit it to see how active it is and how quickly requests are answered.

Thinking Of Using Your Hosting Account For Backup? Think Again

December 9th, 2009

File StorageKeeping your data backups onsite can be risky. If there’s ever a fire or a robbery, you could lose both – your backup copy and your master copy. Of course, shipping your backup tapes or DVDs to an off-site location every day can also be inconvenient.

That’s why so many people today are choosing to send their backup data, over the internet, to an off-site storage facility.

Given that web hosting prices are so cheap, it can be tempting to use your web hosting account as an online file storage or backup device for your home computer. After all, you can now get unlimited disk space and bandwidth for as little as four dollars per month.

But before you start uploading the entire contents of your hard drive, there are a few things you need to keep in mind…

* Check the fine print in your hosting contract. Most web hosts have explicit clauses prohibiting the use of your web server as an online backup device.
* If you upload copyrighted materials to your web server, you face the risk of having your account suddenly terminated without notice.
* Is privacy important to you? Then you need to consider that files stored on your server can also be potentially accessed by nosy strangers online. This exposes you to the possibility of identity theft and privacy breaches.
* Because FTP doesn’t support block-level incremental uploads like an online backup service would, your backups will take forever to transmit. This could also slow down your internet connection and cause problems with your ISP.
* This method of backup only supports a single “point-in-time” file version. If you accidentally save over an important file or get a virus, you’ll have no way of recovering your data.

In recent years, a lot of new specialized online backup companies have appeared on the market. There’s such a wide range of price points and feature sets that you’re bound to find something that’s just right for your particular requirements.

In fact, many web hosts today also offer online backup solutions in addition to their regular hosting services. If you do a bit of research, you might even be able to get a special deal by bundling this software with your web hosting subscription.

This is a much better and safer alternative to the do-it-yourself approach.

Article Provided by Storagepipe Solutions. They provide email archiving and online backup software for businesses of all sizes. Storagepipe also offers reseller programs that allow web hosts to offer their own white-label online backup solutions.

Windows Clustering and Load Balancing, Explained

September 7th, 2009

Clustering in Windows 2003 Dedicated or Shared hosting is a means of providing High Availability to your applications and websites. Clustering is a group of machines acting as a single entity to provide resources and services to the network. In time of failure, a fail over will occur to a system in that group that will maintain availability of those resources to the network. You can be alerted to the failure, repair the system failure, and bring the system back online to participate as a provider of services once more. You learn about many forms of Windows clustering. Clustering in Windows 2003 hosting can allow for failover to other systems and it can also allow for load balancing between systems. Load balancing in Windows 2003 hosting is using a device, which can be a server or an appliance, to balance the load of traffic across multiple servers waiting to receive that traffic. The device sends incoming traffic based on an algorithm to the most underused machine or spreads the traffic out evenly among all machines that are on at the time. A good example of using this technology would be if you had a web site that received 2,000 hits per day. If, in the months of November and December, your hit count tripled, you might be unable to sustain that type of increased load. Your customers might experience time outs,

slow response times, or worse, they might be unable to get to the site at all. With that picture fresh in your mind, consider two servers providing the same web site. Now you have an alternative to slow response time and, by adding a second or a third server, the response time would improve for the customer. High Availability is provided because, with this technology, you can always have your web site or services available to the visiting Internet community. You have also systematically removed the single point of failure from the equation. A single point of failure is removed because you now have a form of redundancy added in.

Pros and Cons to Windows 2003 Clustering and Load Balancing:

You could now be asking yourself, which is better to implement, Windows clustering or load balancing hosting? To give you a quick rundown of the high-level pros and cons to each technology, consider the following. With Windows cluster hosting, you depend on the actual clustered nodes to make a decision about the state of the network and what to do in a failure. If Node A in a cluster senses a problem with Node B (Node B is down), then Node A comes online. This is done with heartbeat traffic, which is a way for Node A to know that Node B is no longer available and it must come online to take over the traffic. With load balancing, a single device (a network client) sends traffic to any available node in the load-balanced group of nodes. Load balancing uses heartbeat traffic as well but, in this case, when a node comes offline, the “load” is recalculated among the remaining nodes in the group. Also, with clustering (not load balancing), you’re normally tied down or restricted to a small number of participating nodes. For example, if you want to implement a clustered solution with Windows 2003 Advanced Server, you might use a two-node cluster. With load balancing, you can implement up to 32 nodes and, if you use a third-party utility, you can scale way beyond that number. You can even mix up the operating system (OS) platforms, if needed, to include Sun Solaris or any other system you might be running your services on. Finally, you have the option to set up tiered access to services and to mix both architectures (clustering and load balancing hosting) together. You can set up the first tier of access to your web servers as load balanced and the last tier of access as your clustered SQL databases.

Shared Web Hosting or Managed Web Host – Which’s Better?

September 2nd, 2009

A website hosting is a service that provides individuals, affiliations and users with online systems for storing info, pictures, video, or other content. These informations can be accessed by the web.
Introduction to

website hosting
Who are Web Hosts?
Web hosts are corporations that provide space on a server for hosting a site. They own large space on the server, which they share it to their customer’s’s providing net connectivity, generally in an information center.

While shared hosting is the most typical sort of hosting available, and excellent for most Internet site wants, managed Web hosts are far more acceptable for accommodating sites with serious traffic or those that contain delicate info, and security is a concern.

Paying for a dedicated server with managed hosting can become dear and is nonessential for little sites. Website host servers are gigantic and tough, and have satisfactory room and bandwidth capacity to host multiple net sites. Should your web site generate heavy traffic, and grow faster than expected, it may grow beyond your present hosting agreement.

In some cases, hosting firms will permit you to agree further space and bandwidth capacity to provide housing for the extra traffic.

If the company does not the choice to purchase an increased level of hosting is often available. Depending on the level of traffic, it may be time to think about moving up to a dedicated server with a managed host.

When to choose for a managed website host High-trafficked web sites, along with those that contain extremely sensitive or private information, are typically better suited on managed Web hosts.

Dedicated Web hosts, distribute one server especially for your Internet site. Put simply, your site won’t share a server with any other sites. Management and administration of dedicated hosts can take time, and it holds the owner of the site responsible for maintaining each facet of the site hosting server, that will also include security issues.

You will also need to explore options that include using shared web hosting prior to making a commitment to a managed or dedicated web host, as it may turn out to be adequate and will save you cash. When to employ a

website hosting agreement If you end up on the opposite side of the fence meaning you provide Internet site hosting services to a client you will have to exploit a domain hosting agreement to control the linkage between you and the customer. You can frequently save an awesome period of time and money by utilizing

website hosting agreement samples and templates. You should be in a position to buy a suite with templates related to

website hosting agreements. Whether or not you are purchasing web site hosting or supplying it, it is important to pay close attention to the site hosting agreement. For users, you may discover what you cannot and can do on your net site, and what you could be entitled to. For suppliers, these agreements will protect you from liabilities related to the hosting of third party sites on your servers. To better understand what these agreements should include, check online for

Web Hosting Service

August 17th, 2009

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

Service scope

The scope of hosting services varies widely. The most basic is web page and small-scale file hosting, where files can be uploaded via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or a Web interface. The files are usually delivered to the Web “as is” or with little processing. Many Internet service providers (ISPs) offer this service free to their subscribers. People can also obtain Web page hosting from other, alternative service providers. Personal web site hosting is typically free, advertisement-sponsored, or cheap. Business web site hosting often has a higher expense.

Single page hosting is generally sufficient only for personal web pages. A complex site calls for a more comprehensive package that provides database support and application development platforms (e.g. PHP, Java, Ruby on Rails, ColdFusion, and ASP.NET). These facilities allow the customers to write or install scripts for applications like forums and content management. For e-commerce, SSL is also highly recommended.

The host may also provide an interface or control panel for managing the Web server and installing scripts as well as other services like e-mail. Some hosts specialize in certain software or services (e.g. e-commerce). They are commonly used by larger companies to outsource network infrastructure to a hosting company.

Hosting reliability and uptime

Hosting uptime refers to the percentage of time the host is accessible via the internet. Many providers state that they aim for at least 99.9% uptime (roughly equivalent to 45 minutes of downtime a month, or less), but there may be server restarts and planned (or unplanned) maintenance in any hosting environment, which may or may not be considered part of the official uptime promise.

Many providers tie uptime and accessibility into their own service level agreement (SLA). SLAs sometimes include refunds or reduced costs if performance goals are not met.

Types of hosting

nternet hosting services can run Web servers; see Internet hosting services.

Hosting services limited to the Web:

Many large companies who are not internet service providers also need a computer permanently connected to the web so they can send email, files, etc. to other sites. They may also use the computer as a website host so they can provide details of their goods and services to anyone interested. Additionally these people may decide to place online orders.

  • Free web hosting service: Free web hosting is offered by different companies with limited services, sometimes advertisement-supported web hosting, and is often limited when compared to paid hosting.
  • Shared web hosting service: one’s Web site is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands. Typically, all domains may share a common pool of server resources, such as RAM and the CPU. The features available with this type of service can be quite extensive. A shared website may be hosted with a reseller.
  • Reseller web hosting: allows clients to become web hosts themselves. Resellers could function, for individual domains, under any combination of these listed types of hosting, depending on who they are affiliated with as a provider. Resellers’ accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a collocated server. Many resellers provide a nearly identical service to their provider’s shared hosting plan and provide the technical support themselves.
  • Virtual Dedicated Server: also known as a Virtual Private Server (VPS for short) divides server resources into virtual servers, where resources can be allocated in a way that does not directly reflect the underlying hardware. VPS will often be allocated resources based on a one server to many VPSs relationship, however virtualisation may be done for a number of reasons, including the ability to move a VPS container between servers. The users may have root access to their own virtual space. This is also known as a virtual private server or VPS. Customers are sometimes responsible for patching and maintaining the server.
  • Dedicated hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, the user typically does not own the server. Another type of Dedicated hosting is Self-Managed or Unmanaged. This is usually the least expensive for Dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the box, which means the client is responsible for the security and maintenance of his own dedicated box.
  • Managed hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server but is not allowed full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, they are allowed to manage their data via FTP or other remote management tools. The user is disallowed full control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not allowing the user to modify the server or potentially create configuration problems. The user typically does not own the server. The server is leased to the client.
  • Colocation web hosting service: similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting company provides physical space that the server takes up and takes care of the server. This is the most powerful and expensive type of the web hosting service. In most cases, the colocation provider may provide little to no support directly for their client’s machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access, and storage facilities for the server. In most cases for colo, the client would have his own administrator visit the data center on site to do any hardware upgrades or changes.
  • Cloud hosting: is a new type of hosting platform that allows customers powerful, scalable and reliable hosting based on clustered load-balanced servers and utility billing. Removing single-point of failures and allowing customers to pay for only what they use versus what they could use.
  • Clustered hosting: having multiple servers hosting the same content for better resource utilization. Clustered Servers are a perfect solution for high-availability dedicated hosting, or creating a scalable web hosting solution. A cluster may separate web serving from database hosting capability.
  • Grid hosting: this form of distributed hosting is when a server cluster acts like a grid and is composed of multiple nodes.
  • Home server: usually a single machine placed in a private residence can be used to host one or more web sites from a usually consumer-grade broadband connection. These can be purpose-built machines or more commonly old PCs. Some ISPs actively attempt to block home servers by disallowing incoming requests to TCP port 80 of the user’s connection and by refusing to provide static IP addresses. A common way to attain a reliable DNS hostname is by creating an account with a dynamic DNS service. A dynamic DNS service will automatically change the IP address that a URL points to when the IP address changes.
