Be a successful web hosting reseller.

January 31st, 2011

Web hosting is an exhilarating first business scheme for many people, and while it might sound difficult to begin with; becoming a successful hosting reseller is actually a fairly simple process. In many cases, you don’t even have to do anything apart from sell the services of an established web host through your own website.

It is especially appealing to web designers and developers as an addition to your existing services.

The first step to becoming a web host reseller is to find a web host who offers several website hosting accounts. By taking out a several domain account, you can use one domain for the development of your own site and then set up other domains to clients’ websites. This enables you to pay a regular fee to the web host while charging clients any price you wish.

After setting up your domains to clients, it is preferable to have full administrative control over your clients’ websites. Ensure that your web host provides not only yourself with a control panel that features full administrative facilities to manage your account, but also provides your clients with their own control panel too. Perhaps the most important feature your web host should offer is the facility to hide your web host’s identity, preventing clients from knowing that you are offering a third party service.

It is also essential that your clients have a copy of your terms and conditions, which are vital in any business. While the writing of terms and conditions can be time consuming, many web hosts may let you copy theirs or supply you with terms and conditions specifically written for this purpose. It is also important to provide your clients with fast and reliable support, solving any problems that arise with their websites as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in unhappy clients and it will also reflect badly on your other services. Tools such as white label guides offered by web hosts can help with this.

One of the best aspects of the business of reseller hosting is that you can start out on this business venture even if you do not have a great deal of expertise. It is also the case that there are times when a reseller can be more scalable than a typical hosting firm, due to true web hosts being limited in its hardware. If a client suddenly requires an upgrade that the host was not prepared for, it will have to go through the time consuming and costly process of upgrading its hardware. A reseller host, however, can simply choose a different web host that will better suit the needs of their customers.

Reseller hosting can be a great profit making venture once you’re up and running and understand the figures and profit margins involved. Buying web space from a major web host is relatively inexpensive and can be redistributed to site owners who need space for uploading their website at a suitable cost. What’s more, some hosts allow customers to oversell the space they buy and do not charge extra unless your account usage go above a certain level, while others offer unlimited web space and bandwidth at no additional cost.

It is said the average user uses less than half of their allotted web space, which means you could double or even triple sell your quota, earning considerably more money in the long run.

Dedicated Web Hosting.

January 31st, 2011

It is extremely important to recognize the concept of web hosting, even if you don’t know anything about it. When you visit a website, you will see a web page that is downloaded from a web server on your own web browser. Generally the website is composed of many web pages and web sites in turn are composed of graphic images and text. These web pages are stored on web servers so that they can be available to web users. It is good to have an understanding web hosting basics that will allow you to make the right decision when you purchase hosting plan. Often times, You May find everything from a dedicated web hosting provider, and the situation may require you to go to the custom server.

If someone wants to have its own website, it is the first time will have to have a host of services that will host Web sites on the web server. Web hosting provider that was well established, it can host many web sites, to thousands of items, for example, Version Next Technologies is a Web hosting company that is very popular and seats up hundreds of thousand pages. While the host of a large number of web sites, web hosting providers require a huge number of web servers to store Web pages. After that, all those web servers are connected to the Internet and are kept in a ‘data center’. Since web servers must work properly all the time, data centers are fully confident that it gives them 24 / 7 environment and protected from fire, virus detection, redundant power backup, HV AC temperature control, computer data backup, and full of opportunities for recovery in case of some fail.

Your website will need about 10 MB (for a small web site) to 250 MB (for large sites) on the server hard disk. Web-based records will enable you to manage your domain name, e-mail and FTP services, password protect directories, and much more.

There are some disadvantages to a dedicated hosting arrangement. You have to pay high monthly fees in exchange for their freedom and an exclusive web hosting. You will also have good technical know-how to run the server properly and resolve any technical problems that occur. It could be time-consuming, but if you hire someone to do it for you, you’ll have to pay for their services. This would mean that you now have the maintenance costs on the amount you have already, that will not be the case in a shared web hosting.

If a dedicated hosting plan is something you don’t like and want to go for a custom dedicated server, then keep in mind the following:

Data storage – this means the area of your website will need the server’s hard drive. It May ranges from a small town with 10 megabytes of storage for large business sites that require 250 MB or more.

Data transfer or bandwidth, which refers to the amount of data transmitted over electronic networks as a response to the demands of visitors. It depends on the size of your website and the flow of traffic to your site.

You would need a web based control panel too with the help of which you can manage your domain name, e-mail, FTP services, as well as password protection and much more.

When you decide to custom dedicated servers, You May want to include a private CGI-bin, which will allow you to run your own PERL scripts and executable s. With a custom dedicated server, it is also possible to get SSI (Server Side Includes) that you insert a file in your HTML pages on the server side.

Your Domain Name as an effective Marketing Tool.

January 25th, 2011

Few webmasters understand the implications of choosing good domain names. You see, your domain names are more than just Web addresses or URLs. Your domain name is your marketing brand and is in fact, the most important marketing tool you possess. It should be a principal part of your marketing plan and should help to draw traffic to your website. Your domain name also gives the first impression for your customers. Please remember that your domain name makes an impression even before your customer visits your website.

Basics of Acquiring a Domain Name

Before you start searching for your name, here are a few basic facts that are handy to keep in mind:

  • Anyone can register domain names
  • You can register as many domain names as you like
  • You can register a domain name even if you don’t own a website
  • You can register a domain up to 67 characters long
  • You can register up to 10 years in advance

The Benefits of a Good Domain Name
Having a good domain name sometimes gives you a decisive edge over your competitors that they often find hard to surmount. Your position in your industry can often be dictated by how good your domain name is. The following are the benefits of a good domain name.

  • It Gives Exclusivity
Your domain name allows you to carve out a piece of the Internet real estate and it’s yours forever. No one can use it or take it away without your consent. Having your own slice of cyber turf can help build name recognition for you and your company.
  • It Adds Credibility to your Site
In business-to-business dealings, people tend to choose business partners with sites that have their own domain names. Having your own domain name gives you and your organization a professional, business-like image that is normally associated with large companies. It tends to project you as a serious business person, operating an established enterprise in a professional manner.
  • It Allows for Permanence while giving you Flexibility
Ownership of your domain name gives you the option of moving your website to any host while maintaining your address. It thus allows for the continuity of your business and allows you to shop for the hosting service that gives you the best bang for your buck.

What an Effective Domain Name Should have
Here are the characteristics of an effective domain name:

  • It should be Memorable
Your domain name should be easily memorized from casual conversation. People should hear it once, and know it forever. A successful domain name sticks on your mind while an unsuccessful domain name requires a lot of advertising to establish itself in the mind of the consumer.
  • It should be Simple and as short as Possible
Your domain name should be easy to remember, straightforward, uncomplicated and as short as possible. The spelling of your domain name should be obvious from the spoken word. Moreover, it should convey only one idea.
  • It should have the .COM Extension
You should do whatever you can to get a .COM name as it has become the default extension for most everyone. The .COM extension seems destined to remain the standard default extension for commercial websites, at least for the foreseeable future. Don’t use a .NET, .ORG, or .WEB, etc. as your primary extension as it seems second nature for internet users to type-in .COM in their browsers when they want to find a site.
  • It should contain the Benefit
If your company’s name is taken, try registering your benefit. If you company’s domain name is taken (e.g: Wendy Pens, Inc.), then you can use your product’s benefit as a domain name (www.durablepens.com). In another example, a company called Resort Sports Network registered their benefit, www.fasttravel.com, instead of their full name or an RSN short form.
  • It should contain the most important Keywords
Some search engines give better listings to sites that include important keywords in their domain names. Think of keywords that people might search for when they use the search engines in looking for the products that you have to offer.

Useful suggestion in Domain Name Registration
After having selected your domain name, bear in mind the following points in registering the name:

  • Register Multiple Extensions
It would do you good to register various domain name extensions (called top level domains). People often type in different extensions because they want to be sure to explore all websites that have the same name. So, if you own www.Google.com, you should also buy www.Google.net or www.Google.org, then point one site to the other. This guarantees that you don’t lose traffic due to mistaken extension.
  • Register Multiple Variations
It is advisable to register different variations of your domain name so that you are assured of catching visitors who type-in words that are very similar.
  • Register Misspellings
If your company’s name can be misspelled, chances are that it will be. Be proactive and register the misspelled name so that you are assured of catching the traffic.
  • Register both the full name and its short form or abbreviation
If your chosen name is quite long, register both its full version, as well as its short form. Many big companies failed to do this and have seen the consequences of this oversight. These are strong points to consider as you weigh the potential benefits of registering your own domain name. Ultimately you’ll have to consider what your goals are and whether the cost of domain registration is warranted. Whatever your decision is; try to keep in mind the points presented above so that your potential customers will find you on the web.

.htaccess Tips and Tricks

January 25th, 2011

.htaccess (hypertext access) is the default name of a directory-level configuration file that allows for decentralized management of web server configuration.

There are tons of things you can do from the htaccess file inside of your web hosting account.  From redirecting the users to controlling who can get in and who can get out, it is a very useful file to have on your hosting account.  To help out the new web hosting clients and to act as a reminder to the old pros around here, I thought I would go through five of the most popular .htaccess tips I know.

Redirect to a Maintenance Page

This is a great one to use if you need to make some quick web page edits, and you don’t want the public to see you edit your web site, while it is still live.

Options +FollowSymlinks

RewriteEngine On

RewriteBase /

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/offline.html$

RewriteRule .* /offline.html [R=307,L]

This will redirect anybody who checks out any web page on your web site to the “offline.html” file.

Force the Use of “www” in Front of a Domain Name

If you want to keep the www in front of your domain name, no matter how somebody types it in, here is the ‘bit of .htaccess magic you will need:

Options +FollowSymlinks

RewriteEngine on

rewritecond %{http_host} ^mydomain.com [nc]

rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.mydomain.com/$1 [r=301,nc]

Once you have done so, both mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com will both send you to www.mydomain.com

Remove the “www” From in Front of a Domain Name

You can also force your domain to drop the www from the address when typed in, if you would rather have it the other way around. In that situation, you would need to add this to your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.mydomain.com$ [NC]

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://mydomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

This will make both mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com send you to just mydomain.com.

Manually Create Custom Error Pages

Ever check out some of those customized error pages and wonder how it could be done? Just use these snippets of .htaccess code to tell people where to look for your error pages.

ErrorDocument 400 /errors/400.html

ErrorDocument 401 /errors/401.html

ErrorDocument 403 /errors/403.html

ErrorDocument 404 /errors/404.html

ErrorDocument 500 /errors/500.html

This tells the server to look inside the “errors” folder and that specific page for each of the different error types. That is not all of the error codes, but they are the ones that will be ‘hit by your users 99 percent of the time.

Block Visitor By IP Address

Need to keep somebody from checking out your web site?  This next tip will give you the ability to deny somebody based on what their IP address is:

order allow,deny

deny from 123.45.6.7

deny from 012.34.5.

allow from all

The above blocks access to the site from 123.45.6.7, and from any sub-domain under the IP block 012.34.5. (012.34.5.1, 012.34.5.2, 012.34.5.3, etc).

Before you go off and plant htaccess everywhere, read through this and make sure you don’t do anything redundant, since it is possible to cause an infinite loop of redirects or errors if you place something weird in the htaccess.

Also…some sites do not allow use of htaccess files, since depending on what they are doing, they can slow down a server overloaded with domains if they are all using htaccess files. I can’t stress this enough: You need to make sure you are allowed to use htaccess before you actually use it. Some things that htaccess can do can compromise a server configuration that has been specifically setup by the admin, so don’t get in trouble.

Why managed Dedicated Server Hosting is helpful For Companies.

January 24th, 2011

If you have decided to get hold of dedicated server on lease from a reputed firm that renders web based solutions, your next duty is managing it. This engage a variety of tasks, which contain administering the server, dealing with the OS and any concern that come up related to the same. All of it is very technical and time consuming, but web hosting firms take care of it by providing high quality server management services. Availing fully managed dedicated servers is very cost effective and provides you the time to focus on running an organization rather than worrying about technicalities of servers.

Since firms that lease dedicated servers to organizations hold expertise in all technical aspects of the servers, they carry out the administrative activities on your behalf, while you rest back. The fee levied by the hosting firm is quite nominal, it is quite cost effective and helps in more ways than one. Such web hosting firms examine the hardware as well as the software of the server in a skillful manner, something a beginner can never achieve This way, the server delivers better performance than it would in case of unmanaged service.

Due to the expertise of the hosting firms in executing the administration of dedicated server they become more stable and reliable and operate exceptionally well over long durations without any glitches. These also attain the feature of greater security due to the familiarity of the specialists with the servers and their details. Furthermore, if you are not satisfied with the dedicated servers management by such firms due to some customary problem, they provide 24×7 support as part of their hosting package.

Transfer Domain Name From One Registrar Company To Another.

January 20th, 2011

This is the question that is bothering many online business owners; how to transfer a domain name ‘Shifting’ from one Registrar Company to another?

We have also heard many people asking if they can shift their expired ‘Invalid’ ones before they renew them. My answer is a big No.

So, here are the tips. The first thing to do before starting the shifting procedure is to apply for a transfer to the registrar company you intend to shift it to. This is to inform it to grant you permission of shifting it to them.

It is your obligation to give your new company contacts of your previous company. These contacts were supplied to you during registration. Your new company will use these contacts to contact the administrator of your previous domain company. Make sure to give the correct information regarding these contacts or else the shifting may not take place.

Note that companies will not permit shift of any invalid names. If it is already invalid, you need to renew it before you shift it. The shift of your name will not affect your website relevant email or either the DNS which stand for domain name system.

The company you intend to shift your name to, will have a form on their website labeled ‘transfer domain’ that you will need to select in order to action a successful shift.

Your new registrar will then contact your current registrar through email, informing it to transfer your name to them. If the administrator accepts the shift, then your name is successfully shifted to the new registrar company.

It will take some days for it to be completely shifted. The complete transfer period differs from one company to another. Some registrars will take few days and some will take a longer period. So, don’t panic if you don’t see immediate results.

If the administrator of your previous registrar company does not grant permission of transfer within the stipulated period, then know that the shift has been rejected.

Your registrar will deny you the transfer of your domain under the following reasons; order by court, if there are outstanding balances you have not cleared, express written objection of transfer by interested party, if it was engaged in any fraud manner and if it does not qualify any transfer requirements.

Domain Name Transfer Qualifications;

  • You should have an permission code from your registrar company.
  • It should be valid not expired.
  • Make sure it’s not closed
  • It should be at least 60 days old with your current registrar before transferring it.
  • It should not be under dispute court case or illegal judges.
  • Contacts of your registrar Company.

You will be charged a fee for shifting it. The amount of fees charged is not the same in all registrar companies. It differs from one company to another.

You may be fortunate to transfer your name for free if only you accept a condition that your new registrar company demands from you.

When you have shifted your domain from your current company to a new company, the new registrar will be responsible for maintaining it. The new registrar will keep all your registration records and also be responsible in managing your renewals.

Do not change any domain contact information prior to transfer! This is super important. If you do, you won’t be able to transfer for 60 days Remember, don’t change the email, address, name or anything. Unless of course you have more than 60 days to play with and don’t really mind waiting then change it and you can start transferring 3 months later.

If your registrar has a push option, it’s a lot easier to use that. Both seller and buyer may have to use the same domain registrar but you can always transfer this later to your favorite registrar. It’s much easier to transfer if you have access to both the transferer and transferee accounts.

Cleaning Mailing List.

January 20th, 2011

Often, you get a lot of returned mail after sending out your newsletters to a mailing list. To clean the list by removing all the faulty email,

1) Store all those email in a new folder in your Outlook Express.

2) Install Extract DBX, extract the dbx file to individual .eml file.
3) Install Email Bounce Handler; drag all those .eml files to the program.
4) Export faulty email address to a text file.
5) Process it at Group Mail, using Purge from group function.

6) Export only the info needed for mailing, when possible. Many contact database programs have wizards that make it easy to specify which fields to export. Skip the phone numbers, email addresses and other data that isn’t relevant for addressing.

7) Make column headings or field names clear. If you have multiple address fields, label the column you want to use as the primary address as “Mailing address.” This will help you better manage the data for future mailings and takes the guesswork out of addressing your mail pieces.

8) When you need to include Customer IDs in the mailing, instruct your mailing services provider on which fields to use to ensure accuracy.

9) If the software that generates your list can export the data in a variety of formats, check with your mail house staff on the best format to use. They can advise you on what format would be both easiest for you to manage, and a format they can use to process your list.

10) If the list will be broken into separate mailings, such as staggered mailings with weekly drops, let your mail house know how you want the delivery sequence to happen. Which states, regions or customers should get them first, second, and so on? A good mail house can work with you to sort or split the list based on your plan.

11) To help avoid delays, take a few minutes to review your list before sending it to your mail house. If it looks confusing, seems to be missing critical address data or doesn’t match your instructions, use the tips above to clean it up or call your mail house for assistance early in the process.

Reseller Hosting Can be a New line of business Choice for Web Designers

January 18th, 2011

When we talk about the web hosting industry, we generally can think of two classes- the provider and the client side. One offer the service, while the other utilizes it to run his or her business online. But actually, there is a third side to it too or one can say a service model that lies between these two sides i.e. reseller hosting. This is a competent yet easy-to handle business model that can anytime be blended with any other business model, enabling owner to earn doubled profits.

The option of Reseller hosting services has been opening opportunities for a number of small business owners who are aiming at taking their current revenue stream higher by rendering custom hosting packages to their client base. However, amongst all business models, the one that seems most apt to be united and rendered with reseller hosting package is of web development services. This is why web developers having a consistently growing client base must consider adding web hosting service model to their line of business.

Including the Cost of Services

an ideal way to begin with this is starting to sell all-inclusive packages. Such packages take care of complete site development and management on the basis of a set monthly fee. Typically, this monthly fee includes expenses of hosting, site maintenance and custom design tweaks that are made as per clients’ suggestions. By combining the two services together, you can actually quote a higher price and aim to make a bigger profit. With the added advantage of being a web designer, you may easily convince your client with a convenient package comprising site design, organization and hosting.

Internet Businessmen

pitching for already established online websites or big giants is not very suitable for you since these will already have big hosting plans. Hitting the right set of crowd is very important for business growth at any stage. Hence, rather than opting for experienced online businessmen, it is better to go after offline crowd, since their information and experience in this field would be much limited. Offline business owners who are not technically inclined are more likely to buy reseller plans, and let me tell you this does not limit your targeted crowd.

One thing that is always consistent with every business owner is the aspiration of growing bigger. Be it a medical shop or a giant corporate house, every business wishes to expand more and more, so that they reach to the biggest of podium of clients and customers. Fortunately, World Wide Web successfully fulfills this aspiration of reaching out the masses, economically. Hence for a reseller hosting service provider, the clientele is humongous. Moreover, since you are a web developer who is ready to take up the projects of web hosting services, the combination of offering website development and hosting may pitch your sales much higher.

Cloud Hosting: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

January 18th, 2011

In recent years, there has been a blurring of distinction between the terms virtualization and cloud computing.  Virtualization is actually not new; it was invented by IBM nearly 40 years ago and allows an IT department to split a single server into several virtual dedicated servers or “virtual machines (VM)”.

This abstraction of hardware and software offer a number of benefits including simplicity, reduced costs, portability and increased agility for a web host or an IT department.

Cloud computing on the other hand extends virtualization through the Internet “As a Service” to deliver remote “on-demand” resources to an IT department at a fraction of traditional hosting costs.

Theoretically, nothing is exempt from end-to-end IT virtualisation including hardware, platforms or software, all of which may be accessed remotely from a hosting provider (via the Internet) as part of a public or private cloud based service

The implications of cloud computing are profound and far-reaching and could be distilled into this simple formula:  Cloud computing = Virtualizations + Internet.

While virtualization has been around for a while, it’s only recently that the managerial and technical capabilities to execute public and private clouds have come together in such a way as to realize the promise of this technology for businesses and enterprise customers over the Internet.

Increasingly, web-hosting platforms in the UK and around the world are introducing new cloud services at a frenetic pace. But, some are struggling more than others to offer adequate support services and keep pace with the evolving demands of their customers based on both private and public virtual dedicated servers.

Further, while forward-thinking companies are waking up to the benefits of the cloud they are still not completely comfortable off shoring their data, applications and storage requirements to a public cloud service provider.

The eternal specter of security looms over any cloud service and is being pushed along by a media hungry to expose the good and bad in this exciting re-born technology.

It’s worthwhile summarizing both the pros and cons of cloud hosting and where you as a decision-maker should be positioning your company.

The Good

Without doubt one of the key benefits to deploying a public cloud is how quick and painless it is. The quick, easy wizard-driven process surprises many skeptics and turns non-believers into converts.

If you add in the elastic ability to scale to meet seasonable demands over Xmas and New Year, then things are looking pretty good.

But it gets even better. Statistics show that some companies may save in costs between 50-70% over traditional colocated and dedicated servers provided they follow a gradual deployment timeline, rather than an overly ambitious one.

Plus, because you can isolate virtual machines (VM) from each other you can minimize exposure to risk between different applications running on different OS platforms.  Many companies are also loving the portability feature of cloud VM’s which allows them to migrate from one server to the next in record time.

The list goes on, including the benefits of standardizing your IT technology platform and reducing complexity. The ability to self-service your future requirements quickly and effortlessly via a metered pay-as-you-go business model appeals to many decision-makers.

Finally, if you find yourself nodding vigorously while watching Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” then you will rejoice in the fact that a public or private cloud promises to lower your carbon footprint and promote “Green IT” as a real concept within your organization.

The Bad

Of course, the biggest fear associated with implementing a public cloud service or a private virtualized server usually centers on security.  Many enterprise customers are skeptical that web hosts can actually protect their resources in the cloud.

The recent phishing attack on Google by Chinese government-backed hackers and the subsequent Denial of Service (DoS) attack on the infamous WikiLeaks website housed on Amazon cloud servers have temporarily raised doubt in some people’s minds.

Ironically, these two incidents will actually serve to accelerate increased security in the cloud and eliminate future concerns. The best minds in the business are currently engaged in this venture. Further, customers may also consider opting for a private cloud over a public virtualized server if they wish to absolutely control the level of compliance and security; they do not need to wait for a web host to catch up with their expectations.  Expect to see private clouds grow in popularity over the next few years.

The Ugly

Yes, it can get ugly. While virtual dedicated servers are generally safe, easy to administer and cost affective, they can be implemented badly, even terribly.  The old expression “garbage in, garbage out” applies just as strongly to implementation as it does to CRM data entry.  When companies rush into a cloud deployment they risk inconsistent results, security implications and costly delays in bringing a product to market.  Instead, it’s recommended that a company start small and gradually add new cloud features “on-demand” as required. This approach, for example, may take advantage of a Xen cloud server to safely test new products in a sandbox environment before making products live to a customer.

The way forward

All the points highlighted above must be tempered by the fact that your ultimate success will depend on the knowledge, experience and customer support features of the web host you select to drive your new cloud implementations.

A number of web hosts in the UK are suffering from growing pains — growing too quickly, too fast, which increases risk for a company seeking long-term stability in the cloud.

Further, make sure your web host demonstrates the ability to offer flexible, customized SLAs to help tailor your requirements in a scalable, cost-effective and safe manner.

If you follow these rules things will be mostly good, hardly ever bad and certainly never ugly.
